Artist Profile
Tery Clement
Originally from Edinburgh, Tery studied Textile and Fashion Design Management Bsc Hons at Heriot Watt University in nearby Galashiels. The university was formally the old Textile College which is widely acclaimed and has produced several inspirational designers. Finding a sense of at ‘homeness’ in the printing studio of the university and a placement with award winning screen printers Timorous Beasties, it was then that her love of printing was realised.
After graduating from university, Tery found work as an assistant buyer for an outdoor clothing company. Working as a buyer for a couple of years was a great and rewarding experience but it was here she realized her true ambition: to start up her own business. A move up north to Applecross in the North West highlands where her partner is originally from brought a new perspective to life and the ability and freedom to start up a textile design and printing business.
After much deliberation and searching, a studio was sought out in the old scullery of Applecross Estate House. The potential was seen from the rundown premises and with a lick of paint, some printed textiles and a lot of love and a print studio was born!
Operating from such a remote location brings about its own arrangement of obstacles and longer timeframes but the reward in the end is so satisfying that it is all worth it. The advances in technology and a bit of imagination go a long way and one can operate a business from almost anywhere these days. Having the ability to pop out for lunch around the corner to the widely acclaimed Potting Shed Café in the Walled Garden or a walk in the beautiful estate grounds is an idyllic way of breaking up the working day.
Tery enjoys experimenting with new commissions and the freedom to be let loose on large interior projects. Spending time in the studio and coming up with new ideas and methods of printing is an ideal way to spend her time - and even better – it’s her job!
